The 2023 GWM Shanhai Cannon has a turbo V6 and a hybrid ute, both of which Australia wants.

As GWM Australia confirmed it is investigating the new truck for local dealerships, which might make it among the first hybrid utes on sale Down Under, the GWM Shanhai Cannon will be sold with three engines in China.

The GWM Shanhai Cannon, a Chinese automaker's ute that targets the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux but comes with a petrol V6 and a category-first hybrid power option, has been unveiled at the Chengdu motor show.

Additionally, GWM Haval has added an Australian right-hand-drive full-size pick-up to their wish list.

"We do believe it might be a strong addition to the GWM Ute lineup locally," the statement continued, "although it is too early to confirm anything further." A recent report from Cincinnatiwire Also discusses this subject

Pricing has not yet been determined, but GWM Haval dealers who are familiar with the new ute claim that the manufacturer is aiming for a starting price under $60,000.

Despite being roughly $20,000, or 50%, more expensive than the GWM Ute now available in local showrooms, this pricing estimate would still undercut the wildly popular Toyota HiLux SR5 and Ford Ranger XLT.

Chinese media claims that the Shanhai (not Shanghai) Cannon will have a body-on-frame chassis similar to GWM's Tank 500, which competes with the Toyota LandCruiser Prado, and that its engine options will provide more horsepower and torque than the GWM Ute.

Additionally, it is bigger than the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, two of the most popular cars sold in Australia.

The tailgate of the GWM Shanhai Cannon can be opened in two vertical parts with a split of 60:40, just like some US pickups, or it can be used in the conventional drop-down method.

The GWM Shanhai Cannon's exterior of the four-wheel-drive Tank 500 wagon looks to have impacted it since the new ute has a chrome grille and headlights that resemble those of the SUV.

The GWM Shanhai Cannon's interior features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The general look is mostly carried over from the Tank 500.

GWM Australia declined to provide an estimated launch date, however, dealers contacted by Drive were assured that, barring any unanticipated delays, it might be in local showrooms in six to twelve months.

A company representative told Drive that although a final decision has not yet been taken, "we are in conversations with the factory about the possibility of bringing it Down Under."

See what the upcoming months have in store.

The GWM Shanhai Cannon might be the first hybrid ute offered locally if it goes on sale within that time frame.
