AP source: Broncos sign free agent Cowboys DE Randy Gregory

 According to a person with knowledge of the agreement, defensive end Randy Gregory and the Denver Broncos have reached an agreement on a $70 million, five-year contract that will preclude the Dallas Cowboys from keeping one of their top targets in free agency.


The guaranteed amount of Gregory's deal is $28 million. Because the agreement cannot be made public until Wednesday, when the NFL's fiscal year starts, the person talked to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.




The 29-year-old Gregory had a seven-year NFL career punctuated by suspensions, but he was coming off a successful and drama-free season. The Cowboys anticipated that the goodwill generated by supporting a troubled athlete would result in a comeback.

Gregory opted with the Denver Broncos instead.


Gregory was added when Von Miller was dealt by Denver to the Los Angeles Rams during the 2021 season. Leading 2021 sacks taker Shelby Harris was traded by the Broncos to Seattle in exchange for quarterback Russell Wilson.



Last season, Harris and Gregory both recorded six sacks. Gregory matched his 2018 career-high performance.


After Gregory, a former star player for Nebraska, tested positive for marijuana at the NFL combine, Dallas decided to take a chance on him in the second round of the 2015 draught. Gregory's first of four suspensions for drug misuse occurred following his first season. He missed the entire 2019 season and made his comeback in 2020 after serving an indeterminate suspension.


The Broncos needed assistance on the defensive line heading into the offseason, and the trade of Harris made that need even more urgent. Miller made a social media allusion to wanting to move back to Denver after the Rams won a Super Bowl. When the Broncos defeated Carolina to complete the 2015 season, Miller was named the Super Bowl MVP.


Dallas is re-signing star defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to a new deal that lessens his impact on the salary cap. Gregory was expected to get part of the cap savings from the Cowboys.
